What is Menopause?

Menopause marks the natural cessation of menstrual periods for a consecutive 12-month period, signaling a significant transition in a woman’s life as reproductive hormone levels diminish with age. This milestone denotes the end of a woman’s fertility, as once menopause is confirmed with a year of absence of periods, pregnancy is no longer possible.

At birth, a woman’s ovaries possess the entire stock of eggs she will ever have, which are stored within and released monthly, awaiting fertilization. This monthly release, if not fertilized, leads to menstruation, a process governed by estrogen and progesterone, the reproductive hormones produced by the ovaries. As a woman ages, the production of estrogen gradually declines until menstruation ceases altogether. While the average age of natural menopause in the US is around 51 years, its occurrence after 40 is considered within the normal range.

However, some women experience menopause prematurely, before the age of 40, which may be attributed to surgical interventions like ovarian removal during hysterectomy, exposure to toxins such as chemotherapy, or certain medical conditions like premature ovarian failure.

Natural menopause unfolds gradually over several years, encompassing three distinct phases:

  1. Perimenopause: This phase typically precedes menopause by several years, characterized by diminishing estrogen production as the ovaries prepare to halt egg release. Women may experience menopausal symptoms during this time due to declining estrogen levels, with symptoms intensifying as menopause nears.
  2. Menopause: Menopause is officially reached when a woman hasn’t had a menstrual period for a full year, indicating the cessation of egg release and estrogen production by the ovaries.
  3. Postmenopause: Following menopause, women enter the postmenopausal stage, marked by the cessation of menopausal symptoms like hot flashes. While pregnancy is no longer possible, the risk of certain health conditions may increase with age during this phase.

Menopausal symptoms can manifest in various forms, with hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, vaginal dryness, incontinence, mood swings, and weight gain, particularly around the abdomen, being among the most prevalent.
